Three decades after introducing the Boxster concept car, Porsche has unveiled its latest triumph in the realm of mid-engined roadsters: the formidable Porsche 718 Spyder RS.Marking a significant milestone, this convertible beauty harnesses the power of the high-revving naturally aspirated engine found in the 911 GT3, a first for an open-topped mid-engined sports car.
Positioned as the pinnacle of the 718 mid-engine model line, the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS is a manifestation of driving pleasure. Serving as the open-top companion to the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, it boasts a 368 kW (500 PS) naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine, borrowed from the 911 GT3. This lightweight power unit, renowned for its high-revving design, also powers the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racing car. The 718 Spyder RS, equipped with a manual soft-top roof, not only enhances the auditory experience of the engine but is further complemented by the standard lightweight stainless steel sports exhaust system and distinctive process air inlets behind the headrests.
Powered by a high-revving naturally aspirated engine and crafted with resolute lightweight construction, the Porsche 718 Spyder RS shares its powertrain with the closed 718 Cayman GT4 RS. The 4.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, reaching an impressive 9,000 rpm, delivers 368 kW (500 PS) and 450 Newton meters of torque. Paired with a short-ratio seven-speed PDK transmission, this powerhouse propels the roadster from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and achieves 200 km/h in just 10.9 seconds. Notably, the Spyder RS outshines its predecessor, the 718 Spyder with PDK, in both power and acceleration.
The new Porsche 718 Spyder RS is exclusively available with the Porsche dual clutch transmission (PDK), known for its lightning-fast gear shifts. Weighing in at 1,410 kilograms, the Spyder RS is 40 kg lighter than the 718 Spyder with PDK and even five kilograms lighter than the closed 718 Cayman GT4 RS, contributing to its exceptional performance.
Featuring balanced aerodynamics, the front end of the Porsche 718 Spyder RS closely resembles that of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, with a front bonnet made of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic). The aerodynamic components, including a distinctive tear-off edge resembling a ducktail, are meticulously coordinated to maintain the car's aerodynamic balance and ensure stability at high speeds.
The purist soft-top design of the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS boasts a manually operated single-layer lightweight soft-top, consisting of a sun sail and a weather deflector. Both parts are removable and can be stowed separately or together in the vehicle. Weighing a mere 18.3 kg, the entire roof, including mechanical parts, is significantly lighter than its counterparts in the 718 Spyder and 718 Boxster.
The Porsche 718 Spyder RS's chassis, borrowing components from the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, is optimized for driving pleasure on winding roads. Equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), and 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, the chassis delivers razor-sharp steering precision and agile, neutral handling.
The interior of the Porsche 718 Spyder RS is tailored for performance, featuring a reduced, functional design. The RS sports steering wheel, covered with Race-Tex and marked with a yellow 12-o'clock position, adds a sporty touch. The standard full bucket seats, made of lightweight CFRP, provide exceptional lateral support, with seat covers available in black leather and perforated Race-Tex in Arctic Grey or Carmine Red.
For enthusiasts seeking additional options, the Weissach Package offers a sporty equipment package, including a magnesium forged wheel, reducing unsprung and rotating masses. A striking magnesium forged wheel and titanium sports exhaust system tailpipes, inspired by the limited-edition 935 from 2018, are also available.
As a special offering, buyers of the Porsche 718 Spyder RS can opt for the Weissach Package and receive a Porsche Design Timepieces handcrafted chronograph. Crafted to match the car's configuration, the lightweight titanium case, carbon dial, and vehicle leather strap create a seamless connection between the Spyder RS and its exclusive timepiece.
Andreas Preuninger, Head of GT Cars, expresses the essence of the 718 Spyder RS, stating, "The 718 Spyder RS raises driving pleasure to a new level for open-top cars." With a blend of the unmistakable GT3 engine, precise transmission, compact dimensions, low weight, and road-optimized racing suspension, the Spyder RS promises an exhilarating and unfiltered driving experience.
