Ferrari has recently introduced the 296 Challenge, set to debut in the 2024 season of the Ferrari Challenge at the Mugello Circuit during the Finali Mondiali.This marks the ninth model in Ferrari's single-make championship, now in its 32nd season. Representing a significant leap forward for the series, the 296 Challenge benefits from advancements driven by the growing competitiveness of global participants. The development team leveraged Ferrari's extensive motorsport expertise to make bold modifications, departing from the traditional approach and drawing inspiration from the 296 GT3, aiming to attract drivers eyeing a future in GT racing.

The philosophy behind the Ferrari 296 Challenge marks an evolution in the concept of the competition model, transitioning from modest modifications on production-derived cars to more substantial revisions for optimized track performance. Notably, this shift allowed the creation of a model with extreme aspects, raising the bar in terms of overall performance, consistency, and repeatability during tests or races.

The 296 Challenge distinguishes itself as the first single-make series car featuring a V6 engine, a departure from the previously used V8 engines. Significant changes from the 296 GTB include the removal of the hybrid powertrain to reduce weight and an increased power output of 700 cv, setting a record specific power output of 234 cv/l. The aerodynamics of the Challenge car incorporate innovations from the 296 GT3, resulting in unparalleled downforce figures achieved through elements like the S-Duct, swan-neck rear wing, and various devices enhancing downforce stability.

The braking system has undergone a complete redesign, introducing CCM-R PLUS discs for improved performance and durability, along with a track-specific evolution of the ABS EVO Track. The 296 Challenge exhibits remarkable consistency in performance throughout races, outpacing its predecessor, the 488 Challenge Evo, by 2" around Mugello.


The V6 powertrain of the Ferrari 296 Challenge underwent modifications, eliminating hybrid elements for a simplified, lighter design. The twin-turbo V6's power output was enhanced to 700 cv, with adjustments to exhaust and turbo characteristics, resulting in a 37 cv power increase compared to the road-going 296 GTB. The removal of hybrid components led to the introduction of an air-con compressor and a 12-volt starter motor.


The braking system introduces world-first CCM-R PLUS discs, providing superior durability and thermal conductivity. The ABS EVO Track control system, combined with innovative discs, delivers exceptional braking performance and repeatability. New Pirelli tires, specifically developed for the 296 Challenge, contribute to improved performance.


Drawing on the 296 GT3's expertise, the aerodynamics of the 296 Challenge focus on delivering unprecedented downforce figures. Innovations include the S-Duct, swan-neck rear wing, and vortex generators, resulting in 870 kg of downforce at 250 km/h. The design minimizes variations in downforce and aero balance, enhancing both performance and drivability.


The cockpit retains the Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo steering wheel with improvements. The layout ensures optimal driver comfort, and compliance with FIA standards is maintained through a meticulously designed roll cage.


Optional equipment includes a passenger seat for coaching or guest laps, an LTE antenna for marshalling functions, and specific exhaust silencers for tracks with noise restrictions.


The 296 Challenge will feature in the 2024 season of the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli in Europe and North America, expanding to the UK and Japan in the following season. The 296 Challenge joins a prestigious lineage of single-make series models, reflecting Ferrari's commitment to continuous development.
